Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition awarded a Parent Information and Resource Center Grant from the U.S. Department of Education Office of Innovation and Improvement
The Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition was awarded a Parent Information and Resource Center Grant ( COPIRC/CSPC ), a five-year federal grant designed to provide training and technical assistance to schools to effectively engage parents in the education process. The primary purpose of this grant is to work closely with schools to implement Parent Leadership Teams for the purpose of developing a sustainable structure for parent involvement. The Parent Leadership Teams will develop a parent engagement plan that fully meets the requirements of Section 1118 of the No Child Left Behind Parent Involvement Legislation. During the first year of implementation, COPIRC/CSPC will work intensively with selected schools in the following school districts:
  • Denver
  • Boulder
  • Alamosa
  • Sierra grande
  • Monte Vista
  • Yuma
  • Holyoke
Through this project, the Parent Leadership Teams composed of an administrator or designee, teachers and parents will participate in four full-day Saturday trainings. Teachers will be enrolled in a Practicum in Parental Involvement through Adams State College and will receive three Graduate Continuing Education Credits.

The Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition will facilitate training sessions for the Parent Leadership Teams including, but not limited to the following topics:

  • NCLB, Sections 1116 and 1118
  • Colorado School Report Cards, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), School Choice and Supplemental Education Services

  • 40 Developmental Assets: Creating an Asset-Rich Environment in Your School Where Every Student Feels Valued, Respected and Challenged to Achieve Their Full Potential
  • Home Learning Support Strategies for Parents
  • Home Learning Support Strategies for Parents
  • Evaluating Your Training Impact
In addition to the school-based trainings, the CSPC/PIRC will include an Early Childhood component. The Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition will work with the ECE/Head Start teachers to implement our Three-Step School Readiness Program, an effective way for parents to prepare their child to be ready for kindergarten. The Three-Step Program is designed to 1) provide parents with parenting skills, 2) equip parents with techniques to teach their child pre-literacy and pre-writing skills, and 3) provide coaching and mentoring to parents in the home.

Parents who have four-year olds are invited to participate in the Three-Step Process training, a comprehensive training that includes:

  • Parenting using the Exploring Parenting 21 st Century curriculum developed by Head Start
  • Constructing Academic Success and Achievement (CASA) training developed by the CSPC
  • A home learning support program that includes coaching and mentoring in the home
Each year, the CSPC/PIRC will identify new schools, but will continue to provide training and technical assistance to partner schools.

In addition to the more intensive services, the CSPC/PIRC will provide training and technical assistance to schools and school districts across the state based on our organization's capacity to meet requests.
